The queen didn't keep her return appointment....
That is unfortunate.
Good afternoon my friends!!
England decided to fake out my companion and me (although she is
English and so probably wasn't surprised that much) and go back to
winter! So fun. We were without tights for a week before and it was
amazing. But winter is back so bring on the coats and scarfs!
Well...thanks. Good thing Sister Cummings left super cool scarfs to
wear.
How is summer? It sounds like an absolute party!
England is super fun! People are progressing--yay! That's always a
bonus. The ward is hilarious as ever. Sister Irish a woman from the
carribean islands has the best singing/screeching voice ever. No
matter what the note may be--she hits a ringing one at least 2 octaves
above.
The best was gospel principles on Sunday. Of course the topic was just
great (signs of the second coming) (actually was better than last week
when speaking of the gathering of the house of Israel) (or the
following week when we will discuss the millienium). (Sorry that's a
lot of parentheses) Luckliy one of the elders taught the lesson. What
makes the lesson so prime is Brother Michael. He is a recent convert
from Africa. Not really sure where in Africa because if you ask him
where is he is from he starts talking about the British starting his
town. And then 10 minutes later he might mention the name of the town.
But he is just--oh man, I don't know how to describe him! He has a
great heart and is a great member he just has the most random comments
ever. Which is just perfect when talking about signs of the second
coming. So here's how the lesson went down...
Elder Stoor and elder Campbell draw a do not enter sign on the board.
You know what it looks like. (I hope so cuz I can't draw while typing
on a computer-unless I make a lot of effort with little dashes- but
that's not going to work.) just imagine a do not enter sign. The
elders talked about how just like we have warnings to help us, God
gives us warnings to prepare for the second coming. Great, genius!
Works great investigators understand, check. Well the lesson
continues...discussion of plague and war and bringing forth the gospel
to all and it is actually staying very on topic and is being taught
pretty simply. (We had a rocking member present so they always knew
how to help the elders reign in the conversation)
towards the end of the lesson Brother Michael raises his hand and asks
a question. (Brace yourself) He says in his strong accent, "wait,
wait, wait. I uh have a question. Now is this stop sign the stop sign
the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints uses or the one they
use in America? Because I don't see the uh similar markings that they
have in this country." (Cue squinty confused face from the elders and
the rest of the missionaries) then Brother Augustine (a member from
Ghana) raises his hand and says. "That is a good question. I see this
sign has two shapes within and if you look at it closely you can see
it is clearly a sun and a moon. And this represents--" woah woah woah!
Slow down there. Elders jumped in and said no no the signs in America
look the same as the signs in England and then proceeded to explain
how the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints does not have an
official stop sign but that we respect all laws of the road no matter
what the stop sign looks like. Hahah my companion and I were DYING.
Our poor investigator, hope, was so confused. Nevertheless the lesson
was legendary.
Another thing that really confuses me in Enlgand--they have free
newspapers EVERYWHERE. And a ton of people are always handing the
paper out. I don't understand. Who is paying for this paper? Is it
coming out of taxes? Do people want newspaper that bad? Why do they
have free paper everywhere? I'm so confused. What purpose does this
hold. Maybe part of the purpose is to come flying and hit us as we
exit the tube. It is definitely succeeding in this regard. Awesome.
One of the best things to share...a miracle...
Hope is one of our favourite investigators. Not only because of his
name in which puns as occasionally allowed, but because he is a
prepared soul.
At the beginning of the transfer Sister Brown and I felt that there
was someone in Lea Valley that was ready to be baptized this transfer.
We felt strongly that someone would be ready to be baptized June 12th.
Unfortunately a couple of key investigators had just dropped us and we
were unsure if we would find someone who is ready. However we prayed
and kept working. Well about a week into the transfer we got a media
referral. A man named hope was taught by missionaries a year ago and
had moved away, but might still be interested in learning more. We
called him up and he agreed to meet. Fast forward two weeks (including
him missing one week of church and making the next) and he was
beginning to get a testimony of the gospel. He read a chapter in the
Book of Mormon and prayed about it a couple of times. He told us in
that next lesson that he had read the chapter and prayed about it. He
said, "I know the book is true." :)
We were so happy to hear those words! He is a fast learner and is
doing really well. In order to have his baptism take place on the 12th
we needed to have his interview this week. And in order for his
interview to happen then he needed to be taught word of wisdom law of
chastity and Ten Commandments. Kind of a packed lesson. However the
lesson went surprisingly well (thanks to the spirit). Hope was willing
to accept the commandments wholeheartedly and is very prepared for his
interview. We are so excited for him!! He is a miracle!
I love this gospel!
