What a crazy morning. Jason had his first big presentation with his new job, and on the second slide into it, sees a call come in with the voicemail transcribing, "Elder Gong would like to meet with you." Of course he loses all concentration, someone gets through the call, then finds me and tells me what happened. Before we can call back, we leave for the airport for a long awaited trip to Beritz, a town in France on the beach. While there, we zoom with Elder Gong. "Have you committed any felonies? Is there anything to prevent you financially from a calling?" Stuff like that. Maybe 20 minutes long. We hung up, amazed to have talked with an apostle. Our world was definitely taking an unexpected turn. I even got a call later that day saying my dream position at Skyline was open if I wanted the job. We come home, and a week before Thanksgiving, get a call from Pres. Oaks office that he'd like to meet with us. So amazing to spend time with him. He was strong, commanding, friendly, and engaging. He greeted us at his office door, brought us in, and immediately turned to Jason. "Jason Michael Soulier, will you accept a call as Mission leader for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints." And then turned to me and asked the same question. Then he stood up, and had us enter the adjoining room where another couple who had just been called was waiting. He spent the next hour going over details without ever repeating himself or stumbling. It was amazing. He's 92 I think? Then he closed with the most powerful testimony. "I know Joseph Smith saw God the Father and Jesus Christ..." When he said that, I sure knew it too.
Fast forward to Dec 14, Jason has gone to St. George for work (and the U2 concert with Matt). We get the email. I said, "Get in the car, we are opening this together." We both start driving and end up at Cove Fort, talking the whole way. Find each other in the dark parking lot, and open the email. It took a minute to find the assignment. LYON. We could not believe it. Jason started laughing and crying. He got out of the car and ran around yelling and whooping. I have never seen him so happy in my life. It was such a joy to watch. Then we walked over to the huge Fort and touched the doors to invoke any Hinckley power we could, and then drove to a nearby gas station where we found a small table in the back. After talking for 2 hours about our wonderful fortune, we went our different ways, talking on the phone the whole way.
